What you eat is who you vote for

Sean has proclaimed me a yuppie because I drink Stella Artois, chardonnay and I eat at Panerabread. According to his prudent judgment, Obama voters constitute yuppies. According to Patrick and my lifestyle, we’re set to be Obama supporters although peppered with a little McCaine. It’s funny because we both support McCain although I do have a soft spot for Obama.. Umm we both hate Clinton. So I took the liberty to do a little survey on myself and Patrick, sentences denoted with N at the end refer to my preferences. P would be Patrick and N+P would be us both:

You might be an Obama Supporter if…

Your exercise regimen involves trail running.

You like burgers made from grass-fed local beef. (N)

You use Sugar in the Raw as a sweetener. (P)

Your favorite supermarket cookie is a soft chocolate chip. (P)

Your fast food restaurant of choice is Panera Bread. (P+N)

You drink Starbucks on a regular basis (P+N)

You shop at your local farmers’ market. (N)

Your shopping cart includes the following products:

  • Bear Naked Granola
  • Lara Bar energy bars
  • Olive Oil (P)
  • IZZE Sparkling Juice drinks (P) *
  • Wolfgang Puck All Natural frozen pizza
  • Kettle Chips ( P+N)
* Patrick refuses to boil water from the tap so we buy mineral water from the supermarket haha
You might be a McCain supporter if..

Your exercise regimen involves fishing.

You like corn-fed beef burgers.

You use Splenda as a sweetener. (N)

Your favorite supermarket cookie is a crunchy chocolate chip. (P)

Your fast food restaurant of choice is Hardee’s.

You shop at Safeway. (P+N)

Your shopping cart includes the following products:

  • Fiber One cereal (P)
  • PowerBar energy bars
  • Margarine
  • SoBe Energy drinks
  • DiGiorno’s Stuffed Crust pizza
  • Sun Chips
The Results:
Obama
N : 2
P: 3
N+P: 3
McCain
N: 1
P: 2
N+P: 1
So technically, Patrick should be an Obama supporter instead of the McCain voter that he actually is. As for me, well I did profess my keenness towards Obama.
Do your tastes indicate who you will vote for?

Shortly after I woke up, I responded to a facebook message and part of that included talking about my life in college starting freshman year when I first met Patrick. Reminiscing has gotten me nostalgic about the good and bad times in these 3 years of my life. It’s funny that looking back it always seems like the hands of time whirled away into a nebulous palette of colors, some happy sad and others angry.

I am not convinced that I got much out of my time in NUS. The curriculum was taught by a bunch of disenchanted lecturers who really couldn’t be half assed, you can see it in their eyes. 3 years is too long of a time to be in one place, to see the same faces every day, to work with different people of the same varying degree of annoyance some neurotic and others plain stupid. The best project group members I had were all in freshman year, funny enough they were all from my USP classes. The people I worked with grew steadily worse, with this semester topping it off. To reference, read the blog post below. You know, I don’t even think I would’ve been even mildly acquainted with these people under different circumstances. It’s hard to hang out with dull people unless you were equally dull. Likewise, it’s difficult to fit in with brilliant people unless you are of equal caliber. Ultimately, you are who you hang out with. Besides, I think people who are friends should stay friends and never try to work or live together.

So often I am guilty of complaining too much about too little. I shall be stoic now and tell myself that the academic year is coming to an end. Indeed my life in NUS has come a full circle, set on completion in June 25th this year. Thus ends another another phase of my life where every remnant of disappointment, and bad karma will eventually disappear deep within the recesses of my memory even a year from now and I will look back only with fondness. Milan Kundera puts it the best :

“In the sunset of dissolution, everything is illuminated by the aura of nostalgia, even the guillotine”

140 fucking words.

I HATE PROJECT WORK.

Especially when it involves talking to complete idiots who are really to stupid to write a paper. I’m not sure which is worse — an apathetic idiot or a complete buffoon.

On sunday, I tortured myself by going thru 1500 words of sheer rubbish; sentences were peppered with childish rhetorical questions, and he kept drawing back to this one movie we saw in class such that half the entire paper made like a film analysis. The other half was absolute trash. Already, in my last semester I’ve had to deal with two absolutely stupid people. The first had forgotten to print out her presentation script. The present idiot  1. can’t write 2. likes to argue with me 3. can’t be bothered to do a good essay 4. can’t be bothered 5. AND still have the tenacity to say we lack 140 words 6. refuses to lie about number 5.

This is solid proof to why NUS really isn’t that much of a big deal that the school makes itself out to be.

People here in Singapore generally and NUS specifically also have no courage to stand up for their ideas or opinions. Today, Gabriel commented on my facebook picture that some people had said something about my picture and asserted their wish to remain anonymous. Clearly, I know these people. They thought that my picture on facebook was really the epitome of Oriental.

Is there something wrong with that?

It seems like people in this part of the world are so ashamed of their heritage. They deny it every chance they can, linguistically and through thoughtless remarks like those. Nobody says a word about white people listening to country music and black people wearing their street fashion. But when I post a picture that conveys the sense of who I am central to my ethnicity which I take pride in, haters galore.

Fret not. I am neither vexed nor appalled by these people. Because anyone who takes pride in neither their identity nor their statement is faceless. For lack of name, and the absence of identity how can there be recognition? So they remain shadows forever, lurking in the darkness of anonymity happily giving up any semblance of individualism into a realm of monolithic darkness.

You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
